Rivers around Århus

In the area surrounding the city of Århus there is a number of smaller rivers that offer good fishing. But they are relatively small and have a limited flow of water. The fishing is thus somewhat unstable and unpredictable, and these waters therefore do not stand a lot of angling pressure.

But all rivers offer important spawning habitat to many of the sea trout living in the Bay of Århus. During winter these rivers often see good numbers of spawning fish surprisingly high up in the systems.

For such reasons the fishing in the smaller rivers around Århus is done primarily by local anglers. Be it with electroshocking equipment during winter when searching for spawning fish to strip for eggs and roe. Or be it with rod and reel during the shallow waters of summer.

Angling hotspots

1. River Lyngbygård

A tributary to the River Århus. Known for its beautiful surroundings and many bends. Add to this a fair population of stationary brown trout and some sea trout. Even salmon have been caught here.

2. River Århus

A smaller watercourse that takes off in Lake Solbjerg near the city of Skanderborg. On its way it runs through Lake Brabrand before it meets the ocean in the harbour of Århus.

The county of Århus has invested a lot of money in the restoration of both river and lake. In many places previously cut off bends have been put back in the river, and just lately the county has finished cleaning the bottom of the lake. Finally, the river has again been brought out from under the asphalt in the middle of the city.

Today you may enjoy good fishing for brown trout in the area between Edslev and Ormslev where also a fair number of sea trout spawn on artificial gravel bars put there by the county. In addition to brown trout and sea trout River Århus also boasts a large population of coarse fish - primarily roach and bream.

3. River Giber

A smallish river that may offer good fishing in periods of high water. The upper stretches hold stocks of resident brown trout whereas the lower stretches are mostly used by migrating sea trout from the Bay of Århus. Beautiful surroundings where this river runs through the forests of Marselisborg.

4. River Odder

Another smallish river important for spawning fish. It even has a population of wild fish originating back for hundreds of years. River Odder empties into the Bay of Århus through the bay at Norsminde. Here you find one of the classic anglling hot spots, Kysing Næs.

River Odder is exclusively fished by members of the local anglling club.

5. Lake Lading

The uppermost part of River Århus. This lake empties into River Lyngbygård through a small brook with no fishing. The lake itself offers fishing for pike, perch and various coarse fish. Limited access for the public.

6. Lake Solbjerg

This lake, the western part of which is often referred to as Lake Stilling, supplies most of the water for River Århus. Plans have been made to let more water out of the lake i periods of low water levels in the river. A significant improvent for the trout population living here.

The lake itself boast healthy populations of pike, perch and pikeperch plus Molva molva - the only freshwater member of the cod family. Add to this a boat load of roach and bream - and limited access for the public.
