Bay of Ebeltoft
Ebeltoft is the city of tourists - placed
highly on the Top Ten list of both swimmers and sailors. But
Ebeltoft is also a great base for sea trout fishing in spring
and autumn when all the tourists - those with no fishing rods
- have gone home again.
The inner part of Bay of Ebeltoft is shallow
and sandy - ideal conditions when you want to swim and tan. Also
ideal conditions for those fishermen fond of fine flounders and
other flatfish.
If you are a sea trout fishermean instead
you should look south - towards places with deeper water and
rocky bottom. This goes particularly so for the steep slopes
at the narrow Dragsmur which separates Mols from Helgenæs.
Especially in March, April and May numerous good fish are caught
here - high season for sea trout fishing in the Bay of Ebeltoft.
Throughout the summer trout may still be
caught here if you stick to places with deep water and a good
current close to the shorelline. Night fishing is much to be
preferred during summer while September and October again yields
fish during daylight.
Should the above places have been taken,
then don't despair. Instead you should continue south - to the
many fine places on beautiful Helgenæs peninsula. The further
south and away from Ebeltoft you get, the less fishermen you'll
meet. You may even continue all the way to Esby Hage which -
together with Lushage and Sletterhage - are tops when it comes
to good sized cod taken from the shore.
You will not catch a lot of sea trout down
here but quite a few of them will be big. 2-4 kg silvery beauties
are not uncommon down here and even bigger ones are a definite
possibility. The same goes for the island of Hjelm - if you have
access to a boat, that is. If so you are in for a battle with
both cod and sea trout of good size! Mind you though that the
island itself is privately owned.
On our way to Hjelm we pass Hjelm Dyb where
you will find some of the deepest areas in all of Denmark. Here
you will hook up with big cod on depths of up to 50 metres. If
you can find the fish, that is.
The Bay of Ebeltoft is quite salty and
for that reason it does not offer any wintertime fishing for
sea trout. Contrary to the Bay of Århus it has no freshwater
tributaries of significant size. When winter sets in, all sea
trout will be gone, head over heals, and so should the sea trout
fisherman!
Angling hotspots
1. Øer Maritime
The area around the maritime holiday
center where ferryboats pass by all the time provides good fishing
of many kinds. Earlier on you could fish inside the harbour -
for stocked rainbow trout - which was great for the family that
wanted to fish together. Stocking has since been discontinued.
If you bring your own boat, you may try
your luck at flatfish in the sandy bay right in front of the
marina. Or you may want to try for sea trout on the west side
of the bay where good spots lie close.
- Or you may try shallows like Øreflak,
Øreflippen or Øreringene where numerous flatfish
are caught most of the year. Turbot are a highly prized catch
here!

2. Hjelm
If you have access to a seaworthy
boat and if the weather permits, then a trip to Marks Stig's
old island is really worth the effort. The island itself is privately
owned but has good fishing at Vesthagen where the current
is always strong and deep water is found close to shore. Few
but always good-sized sea trout, heavy cod and thick flounders
await the fisherman out here. In depths of up to 50 metres!

3. Bogens Hoved
Along the open and windy Bogens
Hoved you will often run into migrating sea trout - especially
during spring. Plenty of space for plenty of fishermen - plus
a good chance of hooking some decent flatfish.
- [ see
map ] -
4. Fuglsø
The coastline under the steep slopes
at Fuglsø offer excellent sea trout fishing during spring
and autumn. Rocky bottom with explicit "bath tubs"
close to the shore. Plus it offers permanent shelter from the
prevailing west wind.

map ] -
5. Dragsmur
The open public area at the narrow
isthmus Dragsmur is mostly used for unloading trailer boats.
But it has good shoreline fishing too as the water is quite deep
quite close to shore.
6. Vængesø
The outlet from the drained Lake
Vænge attracts some sea trout during winter - and many
mullets during summer. Good fishing for cod and - in their season
- garfish too. The road at the school is private though.

7. Esby Hage
An excellent place where sea trout,
cod and - during their season - garfish are regularly caught.
Not quite as known as Lushage and Sletterhage further south and
thus not as crowded.

map ] -
8. Lushage
Preserved area. A classic and very
scenic location that requires a long hike to get to. Few but
often large sea trout are caught out here - often together with
good-sized cod. You may fish at Lushage itself or proceed west
towards Sletterhage and its light tower.

map ] -
9. Sletterhage
Classic hotspot characterized by
very deep water very close to the shore. A few hundred metres
out you have 25 meters of water under your keel - if you are
in a boat, that is! Excellent conditions for catching big cod
on a regular basis. Also good fishing for flatfish like plaice
and turbot. Few but big sea trout.
