Bay of Kalø

You cannot help seeing the Studstrup power plant when you fish the Bay of Kalø. The power plant dominates the landscape with its high chimneys and delivers energy and heat to the city of Århus. The warm cooling water attracts plenty of sea trout during the months of winter - and plenty of fishermen too.

A few kilometres north of the power plant lies the beautiful Vosnæs Pynt that pokes its nose into the shallow Bay of Kalø. Here you may catch sea trout almost all year round but probably this place is best known for its garfish that arrive in May-June to spawn in the weeds of the shallow water.

Due to the shallowness of the upper part of the bay, you have to proceed to the old castle ruin before you get into good trout fishing again.

The shallow water in the inner part of the bay offers good winter fishing for sea trout that like the brackish water found here. Here they also find plenty of food that make for decent growth all through the winter. Only during very cold ice winters do sea trout leave this protected area to look for fresh water.

The whole coastline from Egens Vig to the preserved area at Rolsøgård can be very productive when it comes to sea trout and - in the season - garfish. The same goes for the mouth of Knebel Vig - a narrow strait with strong currents, steep slopes and deep water.

At the same time this is one of the most beautiful areas in the whole county which does not detract from the experience! It is also one of the places where you stand the best chance of seeing porpoises - more commonly here than anywhere else in the Bay of Århus.

If we proceed to the south we pass Skødshoved and Mols Hoved where fish may be caught everywhere. The northern part of Begtrup Vig is shallow and best known for its great swimming beaches. The fishing here is concentrated around the small points on the way towards Kongsgårde - right south of the narrow isthmus Dragsmur that separates Helgenæs from Mols.

Fish may be caught everywhere on our way south. Still the classic localities wait until we reach Helgenæs where hotspots like Sletterhage and Lushage lie - behind great hills and steep slopes.

They are places that have been known and frequented by ardent fishermen for decades. Places that produce both large sea trout and large cod, both caught directly from the shore or from a boat. The good inshore cod fishing is due to the fact that very deep water is found close to the shore, right outside the Sletterhage lighthouse.

Angling hotspots

1. Rolsøgård
A classic locality that fishes particularly well in spring and autumn. Mild winters may be productive too. Rocky bottom with varying depths, shallow water and many mussel banks provide hungry sea trout with plenty of food.

2. Knebel Vig
Exciting area that attracts many sea trout as well as sea trout fishermen. The mouth of the bay is popular with boat fishermen whereas the shallows at Tved on the south side and Knebel to the north attract shoreline fishermen.

3. Vrinners Hoved
Great spot for fishermen not afraid to wade several kilometres through the water in a day's fishing. Good chances of catching sea trout and - during the season - garfish on the stretch from Vrinners Hoved to the marina at Nappedam.

4. Kalø Slotsruin
A truly classic and much frequented fishing hotspot that produces good numbers of sea trout during the months of winter and early spring. In May-June it is often teeming with spawning garfish in shallow water. Yet with a short fly cast you may reach water in excess of 10 metres in front of the castle ruin!

5. Hestehaven
With the forest Hestehaven as a beautiful backdrop you may experience good fishing here after sea trout (spring and autumn) and garfish (early summer). Boat fishermen should beware of the many large boulders found here in shallow water. Many a prop has been ruined here!

6. Følle Strand
The little land point at the Old Folks Home and the shore lake further to the west is a good place to wet a line during winter. Unfortunately this spot takes but a few fishermen so be prepared to stand in line - or go somewhere else!

7. Hundshøj
The shallow water at Hundshøj is well known for its spawning garfish that appear here in schools during May and June. The bottom is soft so wading should be done carefully so as not to get stuck. Light tackle is necessary due to the shallow water.

8. Vosnæs Pynt
From Hundshøj towards Vosnæs Pynt the water deepens and the shoreline becomes more rocky. Garfish are still plentiful during May and June but Vosnæs Pynt is primarily known as a sea trout hotspot.

9. Studstrupværket
The cooling water from the power plant at Studstrup attracts many sea trout during the cold of winter. Throughout the rest of the year cod and herring may be caught just outside the piers at the plant.
