Horsens Fjord

The Bay of Horsens is nationally known for harbouring the largest cormorant colony in all Denmark. It is located on the north side of the bay - on a small island named Vorsø.

Here close to 5.000 mature cormorants breed each year. A number so high that it can be felt on trout stocks far away from the Bay of Horsens.

Still you may experience great sea trout fishing in this beautiful bay. Most cormorants migrate south to the Mediterranean during winter and do not return until spring. In the meantime trout and trout fishermen have a good time!

Sea trout in the 20 km long Bay of Horsens are the result of stocking or they are produced in two important tributaries to the bay: River Bygholm that passes through Lake Bygholm, famous for its pikeperch, before entering the sea in the harbour of Horsens. And then River Hansted that comes from the north and empties into the bay further out - near Vorsø.

The innner part of the Bay of Horsens is shallow and doesn't offer any traditional localities for sea trout fishing. Still you may experience good winter fishing in areas with a soft bottom.

The Bay of Horsens offers variety like no other bay in East-Jutland. It provides a pictoresque setting for many a good fishing trip - if you are not afraid to venture out of the way of civilisation. Then you have many kilometres of great fishing all to yourself.

The north side of this bay is not as well known as the south side. Between the continent and the island of Alrø there is a long embankment that allows you to drive all the way to Egehoved - the southernmost tip of this island and a very good base for a day's fishing. The embankment forces the sea trout to pass close by on their way in and out of the bay.

A characteristic of most good coastal fishing spots in the Bay of Horsens is a shallow and rocky bottom rich in really big rocks. Earlier this was the base of a well established rock-digging business that is prohibited by now.

Finally, don't forget the island of Endelave south of the mouth of this bay. Endelave is usually at its most productive when all fish have left the Bay of Horsens - during the heat of summer. Reason being that it is located right in the middle of some fast and cold currents. Thus you may experience great night time fishing here for sea trout in the middle of your summer vacation!

Angling hotspots

North side:

1. Stensballe
Relatively unknown locality whose soft bottom and shallow water may hold plenty of sea trout during winter.
- [ see map ] -

2. Vorsø
The water surrounding the cormorant colony on Vorsø is very shallow and rocky. This means wading long distances to get in touch with the sea trout of this place. You also need light tackle not to get stuck in the bottom all the time. Good place for fly fishing. Resently, Vorsø has become a nature preserve spanning some 850 hectares with no public access all year round.

3. Egehoved
Here you wade directly to the ship channel and fish the deep water found in Draget - the narrow and deep entrance to the Bay of Horsens. Great care is required as the bottom drops rapidly and the bottom is very soft in places. Fatal accidents have occured here.

South side:

4. Flintehage
A very exciting and little known spot that may yield good fish - especially during spring when fish are migrating. Care is required as the bottom drops rapidly and the bottom is soft.
- [ see map ] -

5. Borre Tange
The long and narrow land point Borre Tange offers - just like Egehoved on the north side - the opportunity to fish directly out into Draget. But it requires a good hike which keeps most fishermen away. Care is required as the bottom drops rapidly and the bottom is soft.

6. Snaptun
A classic locality at the mouth of the Bay of Horsens. You may fish to the north along Hestodde but going south towards Batterierne is far more popular with local fishermen. This spot is good for sea trout but better known for its steelhead that have escaped the floating net cages of the local fish farm.
- [ see map ] -

7. Hjarnø
If you take the ferry boat to Hjarnø, you may fish Hjarnø Sund from the north side. Especially at Odden south of the harbour deep water is within reach of even a short cast. Good spot for fly fishing - with intermediate or even sinking lines.
